Introduction

In the journey of a CBSE student towards his/her first public exam in 10th grade, 9th grade Mathematics is the most challenging.

Though at the same time, it is an opportunity for you to rise to the occasion and master the art of problem-solving and building confidence in life. Problem solving is highly relevant for leadership today, and it directly affects your chances for admission to higher education in competitive exams. Competitive exams are a first-level elimination process, where they are mostly 66% problem-solving based on high school mathematics, suited to all.

Now, let's start with why 9th grade can be tough.

  1. Apart from having to cover all major chapters in the syllabus for your last exam, including the big four chapters on Geometry, it requires you to master many concepts simultaneously and develop the art of applying your logic and reasoning over longer periods. This is the foundation for you to master the art of problem solving.

  2. Today, due to high rates of urbanization, the number of CBSE schools in all major cities has atleast doubled, and there is a gap in the availability of quality faculty, especially in Mathematics. This has to do with the internet revolution from the 2000s and the current generation of prospective teachers in Mathematics & Science opting for Engineering and not for higher education in these subjects.

  3. Now, this is also a time when students get leadership positions in schools, in sports, and extracurricular activities. The schools today also give importance to this, which is highly relevant in our world today. In between this, students fail to invest even the time they invested in 8th-grade mathematics.

  4. Now, when students are busy involved in leadership activities, even at home, today we have two parents working in most families. Also, the absence of grandparents due to urbanization means that students are not monitored, and by October, when most schools have their first term exam with atleast a couple of Geometry chapters, the students fall out of the Mathematics train.

Now, coming to some pointers from our side on how to make sure you perform relatively well during the best times of your life in totality.

  1. Make sure you clear your concepts by being proactive in school or having an experienced tuition teacher. It takes experience to pass on the art of problem solving.

  2. Make sure you master the first four chapters, which are relatively easy compared to the following chapters in Geometry. This is important since a couple of chapters will be included in your last term exam, which is usually a model for the 10th grade CBSE.

  3. Understand the first chapter of Euclid’s geometry. Why and what was its purpose of the compilation of Elements by Euclid, and why is it still relevant in today’s world after more than 2000 years?

  4. Now, it is time to step up a gear and first make sure you are through with all questions in the NCERT for the following four chapters in Geometry. This is because most schools would stick to NCERT for atleast 80% of the problems for the last crucial exam in Geometry. Both teachers and students have a tough time with these chapters.

  5. Next, master the last four chapters, which are straightforward compared to the entire syllabus you have covered. The school will be forced to have a good number of questions from these chapters, since they have just been taught after the first term exam.

  6. Start your preparation for Geometry for the last term during your Christmas break, so that your momentum is not lost and you have time for other subjects as well.

  7. Finally, through the entire course, try to have a fair copy of the textbook problems, important questions discussed from school outside the NCERT, and those of different types and difficulty levels you have come across for each chapter, during the year, in separate files. This will help you to prepare for the last few study holidays, especially for a subject like Mathematics.

To sum it up, spend quality time on the subject in between all the activities in school, at an important phase in your life. Always aim to present your last term exam paper with dignity and make sure you don’t put yourself and your family in a spot of bother. Schools will filter out those who performed very badly, and if they see that there is no hope of improvement. Your marks in Mathematics in this grade will go a long way in boosting your confidence and also help you judge the right career path.
